Sustainability Committee: |
Bonnie Peck: We met on June 10th. We have to submit a sustainability plan for the coalition the would lay out how we plan to sustain ourselves past the end of the Drug Free Communities Grant which ends on September 29, 2024. The group looked at the original plan template created in 2021 before I was hired and made some suggested changes. We will be looking at other federal, state, and private grants to continue our work. However, we need to also start developing a fundraising plan in case we are unsuccessful getting grants. Ideas discussed also included asking for some financial support from the city, researching services the coalition could provide for a fee, asking for businesses and individuals to donate towards the coalition. Some parts of the budget could be met through in-kind donations. Stay tuned for more details. The Committee will be meeting again on July 21 which is our normal GCC Meeting Day using the GCC Meeting zoom link. Anyone is welcome to join us and help detail the sustainability plan. |

NEU Planning: |
Tomorrow (Friday, June 17) at 11am is the Bag Stuffing for the NEU event next week at Elk Street Park. NEU which will run from 3:30pm-6pm. We will be stuffing 50 bags for this first event at HFM Prevention Council. If you have items you would like in the bags, please drop them off there before 11am that day. Also, who will be available to help with stuffing? Walking Team members are still needed, the following are the people I recall having volunteered to walk. Alicia King, SallyBaker, Brenda Hansson, Amanda Nellis. We need about 2-4 more people. I am going to go out around the vicinity of Elks Street Park and hang the flier. Anyone want to help me with that? I was thinking about doing it in the afternoon tomorrow after 2pm. The second event will be on July 28th at the Family Counseling Center parking lot. Since we don’t have a full meeting in July of GCC, we need to plan for that event now. When shall we do the bag stuffing? Where (would Family Counseling Center have a room we could do it in and leave the bags until the event? Booklet: Revision hasn’t been completed and sent to me yet, so If I don’t have it by the end of the day today, I am going to reprint the most recent one I have. |

I would love to do it in collaboration with an agency/organization that works closely with parents. Location, suggested dates/times between August 15 and 25. Ideal group size would be 10-20. |

Summer Events and Messaging: |
Just a reminder that this is a time of year when our community has a lot of great events, festivals, outdoor celebrations etc. It is a time when we see alcohol being sold at community events and people gathering. All City parks are already designated as tobacco free and that includes e-cigarettes. One thing our youth survey told us was that young people perceive it normal to use those substances because they see adults using them, and they see advertising and products everywhere they go. Please be sure that if you and the organizations you are involved with are clear about age restricted use and consider ways to keep families protected from exposure to those substances. Added signage reminding participants that they can’t smoke or drink at the events helps a lot to move the needle away from “normalization”. |
