A Program Director for the Glove City Coalition has been hired. The Glove City Coalition is a group of community leaders and citizens with the common goal to reduce youth substance use/abuse and to promote healthier lifestyles for the youth in the community of Gloversville. The Glove City Coalition is funded with a Federal Drug Free Communities Grant through the Center for Disease Control. Bonnie Peck now serves as the Director and Program Coordinator for the coalition that has representatives from 12 different sectors within the Gloversville Community.
Mrs. Peck has a background in Youth Develop, having worked with Cornell Cooperative Extension as a 4-H Educator, Advancing Tobacco Free Communities of Delaware, Schoharie, and Otsego Counties as a Reality Check Coordinator, and most recently with Catholic Charities of Fulton and Montgomery Counties as a PAX Coordinator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland and a master’s degree in liberal studies from Empire State College. She resides in Gloversville with her husband, Dayne. Bonnie has three daughters who have all graduated from Gloversville High School.
The Glove City Coalition envisions promoting a healthy future through collaboration and education- and has a mission of striving to reduce youth substance use by engaging and supporting the community through education and collaboration to promote and sustain healthy lifestyles.
Currently, the Coalition is made up of community representatives including youth, parents, businesses, media, school, youth serving organizations, law enforcement, civic/volunteer organizations, religious/fraternal organizations, healthcare professionals, state/local/tribal government, and organizations involved in reducing substance abuse as well as other community members who are interested in working together to achieve a common goal: to reduce youth substance use/abuse and to promote healthier lifestyles for the youth in Gloversville.
In addition, the coalition supports and collaborates with the Glove City Youth Coalition, a group of youth at Gloversville High School who work to educate their peers on the harms of substance use and the benefits of building healthy lifestyles and serving their community. The Glove City Youth Coalition is under the direction of Paul Meher, Prevention Educator at HFM Prevention Council.
Based on New York Needs Assessment Surveys as well as other research based data sources, the coalition develops programs for the community and engages in a variety of events and activities to help decrease youth use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco products.
